With every season comes a new set of challenges for driving. That’s why properly preparing and maintaining your vehicle will help you be ready to tackle whatever Mother Nature throws at you. Here are five tips for getting your car ready for colder weather.
5 Winter Weather Maintenance Tips
Catch up on regular maintenance
The fall months are the perfect time to get caught up on the regularly scheduled maintenance your vehicle requires. That includes oil changes, tire rotations, tune-ups, and more. Getting your vehicle into a service center will allow the technicians to inspect all the areas of your car that you may not normally see.
Inspect and top off any fluids
Take a quick look at the transmission fluid, windshield wiper fluid, and oil. Is your vehicle is running with the correct amount? If not, add in any that might be low and switch to a winter-specific product if necessary.
Clear your line of vision
Check your vehicle’s windshield wiper blades for any tears or cracks. These can leave streaks on your windshield when they move, hindering your visibility. Getting new wiper blades is a simple and easy fix to maintaining clear vision when it rains.
Try Honest Abe’s Test
Your tires are where your car comes in contact with the road. That’s why having the right amount of tread and proper inflation is key to maintaining your traction in slick conditions. Grab a penny and insert it into the tread with Abraham Lincoln’s head aiming at the tire. If you see all of Abe’s head, the tread is too low, and you need to replace the tire.
Let there be light
In the colder weather months, the sun sets much earlier. Add in ever-changing weather conditions, and your visibility can be limited during your drive. Making sure your headlights and brake lights are in prime working order is critical to maintaining optimal visibility.
Turn on your headlights and brake lights. If any of the lamps are out, swap out the bulbs for new ones. Next, take a look at your headlights and brake lights. If the lamps look hazy, it can diminish the brightness of each one.
