In the landscape of the market today, there are dozens and dozens of hybrid vehicles to choose from. A decade or so ago you would’ve been quite limited, but the importance of fuel efficiency not just in terms of gas prices but also its impact on the environment has led to a plethora of new hybrid vehicles being introduced through the years. There are a host of hybrid-specific nameplates out there following in the footsteps of the Prius, like our very own Ioniq, but there are also hybridizations of popular nameplates that already exist.
We thought we’d see how our midsize hybridization measures up to one of the hybridizations belonging to the pioneers of hybrid technology, by pitting the 2019 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vs 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The Sonata and Camry are arguably the most popular and recognizable models on each lineup, so their hybrid models should have something to offer for everyone.
2019 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid |
Vs |
2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid |
---|---|---|
193 HP | Horsepower | 208 HP |
42 mpg | Combined Fuel Efficiency | 52 mpg |
13.4 cu. ft. | Cargo Capacity | 15.1 cu. ft. |
5 | Seating Capacity | 5 |
Unfortunately, unlike most of the comparisons you can find here on our website, the table just above doesn’t exactly paint our entry in the greatest light. The first row highlights the fact that the Camry Hybrid generates an extra 15 horsepower, the second an extra 10 miles per gallon combined fuel efficiency, and the third an extra 1.7 cubic feet of trunk space. The Sonata Hybrid’s only reprieve where this table is concerned is in terms of seating capacity, which it’s able to match at 5.
However, there is much more to these vehicles than just numbers like this. The Sonata Hybrid has plenty to offer, not the least of which is its incredible style. Things like complimentary Blue Link services and America’s Best Warranty certainly give it a leg up on its competitors, including the Camry Hybrid. For instance, its warranty includes an additional 2 years and 24,000 miles extra coverage for its new vehicle limited warranty and an extra 5 years/40,000 miles more for its powertrain limited warranty.
